The end of the Paris Agreement?
Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. With this decision, which has shaken the international community, the United States will join Iran, Libya and Yemen, the only four countries not to be party to the agreement. This withdrawal could have serious consequences, as it takes effect quickly, and raises fears of difficulties in the fight against climate change.
Trump's action increases the chances that, without US leadership, the world will fall even further behind the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, a threshold that could accelerate the rate of damage. But for Trump, the priority lies elsewhere: he has promised to massively revive the US fossil fuel industry, calling his predecessor's climate policies a “green new scam” and declaring in his inaugural speech that he wants to “drill, baby, drill”.
In a scenario where Donald Trump reverses most of his predecessor's climate policies, US emissions would fall by only 24% to 40% below 2005 levels by 2030, the Rhodium Group found.

The Environmental Impact of AI

The total emissions resulting from the training of GPT-3 over the course of 1 year total 238 759 kgCO2e.

New generation artificial Intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT hit the mainstream recently, and due to their increasingly advanced capabilities (ChatGPT can produce incredibly accurate and realistic copy), and their ease of access (anyone can use ChatGPT for free), they’re being used for everything from homework to drafting legal briefs.
Some are even predicting that they’ll eventually change the shape of our job market.
But their increased use isn’t without a cost, AI technology and chatbots leave behind a significant carbon footprint:
Based on these calculations, for GPT-3 to answer 1 million emails per month, over a 1 year period, this would result in a total of 240036 kgCO2e (240 tCO2e). This correlates to a total of 136 round trips between Paris and New York!
